How often should fire alarms be tested?
BS 5839 requires weekly user testing of fire alarm systems (typically activating a different call point each week), with formal six-monthly servicing by a competent fire alarm engineer. Annual servicing covers the full system. Avero coordinates the engineer attendance, weekly test logs and certificates in Avero FM Works.
What category fire alarm do I need?
BS 5839 defines categories from L1 (full detection in all areas, highest protection for life) down to L5 (localised detection). Sleeping risks (hotels, residential, care homes) need higher categories. New buildings should be specified by a fire engineer, existing buildings reviewed in the fire risk assessment. We can assess and recommend based on your property type and occupancy.
How long should emergency lighting stay on in a power cut?
BS 5266 requires emergency lighting to provide at least 3 hours of illumination on escape routes in most commercial buildings (and 1 hour minimum in lower-risk premises). Annual full-duration testing is mandatory. We service to BS 5266 and provide test certificates against the property.
Do you service fire extinguishers as well as install them?
Yes. Annual servicing, refills, hydrostatic testing every 5-10 years (depending on type), and replacement at end of life. Asset registers track every extinguisher across every site, with service history and next-due dates visible in Avero FM Works.
What is a disabled refuge system (EVC) and do I need one?
An Emergency Voice Communication (EVC) system, also called disabled refuge system, allows people unable to use stairs to communicate with the fire brigade or building management during evacuation. They are required in most multi-storey commercial and residential buildings under BS 9999 and the Equality Act. We install and service to BS 5839-9.
